Theresienwiese, Munich, Germany
Oktoberfest - O'zapft is!
The Oktoberfest is a Bavarian folk festival held on the Theresienwiese in Munich. At the Oktoberfest, visitors enjoy hearty Bavarian meals and, of course, beer. Traditional Bavarian music is played, people dance, and many guests wear traditional clothing such as lederhosen or the dirndl. The festival also features numerous rides, including a Ferris wheel, roller coasters, and carousels. Particularly famous are the large beer tents, which are set up weeks in advance exclusively for the festival.
In the Bavarian dialect, the Oktoberfest is simply called the Wiesn, named after the Theresienwiese where it takes place. It lasts a little over two weeks and is the largest folk festival in the world, attracting around six million visitors each year. Guests come from all over the world, many of them traveling to Munich specifically for the Wiesn.
The Oktoberfest begins on the first Saturday after September 15 with the festive parade of the Wiesn landlords into the big tents: a procession of musicians, horse-drawn carriages, and decorated wagons makes its way through Munich to the Theresienwiese. There, the mayor of Munich taps the first keg with the traditional words “O’zapft is’!” – meaning “It’s tapped!”. With this, the festival is officially opened, and the very first beer is served to the Bavarian prime minister.
You can reach the Oktoberfest within 20 minutes by car or public transport.
